Fifth grade is working through two science standards currently that challenge us to understand shadow patterns created by the sun . We learned where the idea of tracking time using 12-24 hours came from as well! We made shadow clocks, utilized a digital compass, and practiced telling time using shadows created by the sun. We also used artificial sunlight with flashlights to tell time.

Second graders estimated if they could reach the center of a Tootsie Pop with 100 licks. About 45 minutes later some students were in the thousands and still no luck! They sure had fun!

For the 100th day of school, the fourth grade did different activities throughout the day. One was working together to write 100 appreciations to different staff members to show their thanks for all that they do.

We had our Kids Heart Challenge kick-off this morning. If you haven't had a chance to register your children in PK-6th grade yet, you can do so at http://www2.heart.org/goto/PlankintonSchoolPlankintonSD! The kids are excited they are so close to turning Mrs. Victor into a human sundae! If they raise $3,000, they also get to turn Mrs. Johnson into a human sundae!

The fourth grade has spent the past week exploring sound vibrations and how they travel through materials. They used cups and string to make telephones, felt vibrations through balloons, and explored how vibrations travel through air. They then learned why sound can't travel through space.
